Dog Pregnancy Calculator

Enter the date your dog was bred, or the ovulation date your vet confirmed, and get an estimated due date, a window for when the puppies usually arrive, and a dated list of what to do and when. Dog pregnancy lasts about nine weeks, but exact timing varies, so use this as a planning aid alongside your vet’s ultrasound.

If she was mated on several days, use the first day. The due window will be wide, and your vet’s ultrasound dating will be more precise.

How long are dogs pregnant?

Dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days, or roughly nine weeks, counted from ovulation. Counted from the mating date the range is wider, usually 58 to 68 days, because ovulation does not happen on the same day as mating and sperm can survive for several days. That is why this calculator shows a window around the due date and not a single day. If your vet confirmed ovulation with progesterone testing, choose that option for a tighter estimate.

Can I tell at home whether my dog is pregnant?

Early signs are subtle and easy to confuse with other things. Some dogs eat less for a few days around the third or fourth week, and the nipples may become larger and pinker. A rounder belly and visible weight gain usually show later, around the second half of pregnancy. A false pregnancy can look very similar. Only a vet can confirm it, usually with an ultrasound from about day 25.

What to prepare

Book a vet check early in the pregnancy and ask about diet, deworming and what to expect. Set up a whelping box in a quiet, warm room about a week before the earliest due date. Keep clean towels, a heating source your vet approves, and your vet and emergency vet numbers close by. Do not give any medication or supplement without asking your vet.

When to call the vet

Strong contractions for 30 to 60 minutes without a puppy, more than two hours of rest between puppies when you know more are inside, green or bloody discharge before the first puppy, or no labor well past the due window are all reasons to call right away. If you are unsure, call. It is always better to ask.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a dog pregnant?

About 63 days from ovulation, or between 58 and 68 days from the mating date.

Why is the due date a range?

Because ovulation timing and sperm survival vary. Two dogs mated on the same day can whelp several days apart. An ultrasound or progesterone-based dating from your vet narrows the window.

Where does heat timing fit in?

The timing of the heat decides when mating can lead to pregnancy. Our Dog Heat Cycle Calculator explains the stages and warning signs.
