How the loose-leash score works
The score deliberately does not reward long walks. A ninety-minute walk spent pulling is ninety minutes of practicing pulling. What it measures is the quality of the walking behavior and the conditions producing it.

What the equipment research actually found
This is the part most equipment advice gets wrong, in both directions.
A 2024 study measured pulling force directly across four equipment types on 23 dogs. It found no statistically significant difference between a front-clip harness and either a plastic or a metal prong collar. The aversive equipment did not buy extra control that could be measured.
Separately, research applying pressure through a collar versus a harness found that collar pressure significantly raised intraocular pressure, while the same force through a harness did not. And a simulated-neck study found all seven collars tested produced pressures at levels associated with tissue damage.
Put together: you lose nothing measurable by switching to a front-clip harness, and you remove a documented welfare cost. That is why equipment carries 20 points here.
The retractable lead problem
A retractable lead works by maintaining constant tension on the line. Every step your dog takes, it is pulling against something that yields — which is precisely the lesson you are trying to unteach. There is no version of loose-leash training that is compatible with one.
The rule that is most of the method
A tight lead never moves your dog forward. Not once, not when you are late, not when it is raining.
Giving in occasionally is worse than giving in always, because intermittent reinforcement produces the most persistent behavior there is. A dog that gets through on the tenth pull learns to pull ten times.
When the lead tightens: stop dead and say nothing, or turn and walk the other way. The moment it slackens, move on. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the tool weights it at 16 points while equipment sits at 20 — equipment buys you time, this rule buys you the behavior.
Why sniffing is scored
Research comparing dogs doing scent work with dogs doing heelwork found the nosework group became measurably more optimistic on a cognitive bias test. Sniffing is not a distraction from the walk — for a dog it is much of the point.
A structured release also converts sniffing into something you grant rather than something your dog must pull to reach. That is a practical training gain, not just a welfare one.
When this is not a pulling problem
If your dog explodes at specific triggers — other dogs, bikes, particular people — that is reactivity, not pulling. The tool detects this and stops rather than scoring it.
The distinction matters because the standard advice for pulling can make reactivity considerably worse. A lead correction delivered as another dog appears adds pain to a situation your dog already finds threatening, and you may suppress the barking while strengthening the fear underneath.
